Testing Your Car's Battery to See If it Needs to be Relaced

If your battery runs out of juice, your automobile will not work, so it's important to test your battery periodically to find out how much power it has. You can do this with a device called a multimeter.

With your car off, connect the multimeter cables to the positive and negative battery terminals. The reading should be at least 12.6 volts. Next, turn on your car and rev the engine to see if the voltage increases, preferably above 15. If the voltage drops with the engine on, it's a sign you have a bad battery.

You also can do a rudimentary test without a multimeter. Turn the car off and turn on the headlights for about 10 minutes. If the headlights dim when you start your engine, it could mean your battery is failing.
